Appointment with Sophie Calle

A take on the work titled “Appointment with Sigmund Freud” by French artist, Sophie Calle.

Objects are emotionally charged, subtle reminders of your past and present infiltrating your surroundings, made tangible and ready to make your life heaven and hell.

We bought gloves that were on sale, 20% off. That night, we took the train to the Rockefeller center and waited in line for the skating rink. You helped me skate backwards and held my hand through the gloves. A couple got engaged that night. You rolled your eyes so I did too, but I just wanted to keep watching.

I was five. Whenever my mom left for work in the morning, I would yell out her name from the window in our apartment. I thought she was never going to come back. Sobbing, I would run to her room, pick up her pajamas and sniff them. It was always the same scent, Lady Speed Stick deodorant. I use the same one now. We match.

You hid a bouquet of flowers behind your back. I called you a nerd when you handed them to me. You were holding the popper in your other hand, and I bit my tongue when you shot it at my face. Confetti fell on my scarf. It was the best Valentine's Day I ever had.

When I was a child, I would sneak into my mother's bedroom when she was gone. I'd search through her drawers. I used to take her lingerie and hide it behind my dresser so she wouldn't have anything to wear for her current boyfriend. I felt ashamed. Now, all I think about are the pretty things I want to wear for you.

You took me to Build-A-Bear workshop because you knew I had never gotten the chance to go there. I was seventeen, and when they handed me my bear's birth certificate, I cried. I got him two outfits because I couldn't choose just one. It's been a while, but thank you for forgiving me.
